Search Engines

Examples:

What they are:
A Search Engine is a database of pages on the World Wide Web. Webmasters submit their sites to each individual search engine with a description of the content of their site, their address, and the date submitted. When you search using keywords, the database of the search engine is searched for sites that match your keywords and produces a list of sites ranked in order of relativity to your keywords.

How to use them:
To use a search engine, you simply type in their address in Netscape to get to their page, enter in your search phrase or keywords in the field provided and click on the Search button. A few seconds later, you will be given a list of sites that correspond to your search. Click on one of them and you will be sent to that site. Some search engines work better than others for most people. Finding one that meets your needs is a process of trial and elimination. If you are looking for a wide range of pages on a basic topic, try sites such as Yahoo that have category listings. For specific pages that contain specific strings, try sites such as Alta Vista. For best results, try them all and come back to the ones you like.
