File Transfer Protocol (FTP) in Windows
File Transfer Protocol (FTP) in Windows 95 and 3.1x:
- First, you need to obtain an FTP program.
- We suggest WS_FTP for Windows 95, 98, NT, 2000 and 3.1x.
- Download WS_FTP to
your desktop or a folder that you can remember. Double-click on the file
that downloads and the installation program will start. Follow the
directions for installation, accepting all the default values.
- Important Info. for Domain Name clients!

Setting up a Profile:
When you open WS_FTP, you are given the option to create a new profile. If this screen
is not available, click on "Connect" to bring it up. Click "New" and enter the following information:
- Profile Name: Worldlink
- Host Name/Address: ftp.w-link.net
- Host Type: UNIX (standard)
- User ID: your username
- Password: your password
- Leave all other settings at their default values.
- Click OK to connect.

Connecting to Worldlink and transferring files:
- Click OK from within the Session Properties window to connect.
- When connected, the right side will reflect your account contents on our server while the left side will reflect the contents on your computer.
- Folders are shown with a yellow folder icon while files are shown with a white box icon.
- To transfer files, click on the file you want to transfer and click on the arrow button in the center to tell it where to go (the opposite side).
- Transferring from the left to the right is "uploading" while transferring from the right to the left is "downloading".
- To upload web page files for your personal web page, double click on the "public_html" folder on the right side and following the directions below.

Uploading files for your web page:
- All web page files must go in the public_html folder. You can have subfolders inside public_html to help organize, however.
- Select the files you want to include in your web page on the client side (left side) so that they are highlighted and click the arrow pointing to the server side (right side).
- Watch the status bar at the bottom reflect the transferring of files. When it is complete, it will read "Transfer Complete".
- Your files are now accessible through Netscape or Internet Explorer.
- Your web page address is http://members.w-link.net/~yourusername/.html where .html is the name of your html file (ex. index.html)

For Domain Name Clients:
If you have a Domain Name through Worldlink, there are a few important changes to be made
pertaining to the information above:
If your domain is on our UNIX server:
- The host address should be: www.w-link.net (instead of ftp.w-link.net)
- The directory to which you upload your pages should be: /httpd/htdocs/yourdomain (instead of
/home/username/public_html)
- Your web page address will be: http://www.yourdomain.whatever (instead of
http://www.w-link.net/~username)
If your domain is on our Windows NT server:
- The host address should be: www.yourdomain.whatever (example: www.blah.com)
- The remote directory (upload directory) should be blank.
- Your web page address will be : http://www.yourdomain.whatever
